Homepreneurs Success Story – G & D Products

October 30, 2011

Homepreneurs loves writing about successful home business or small business success stories and sharing them with our reader base.  Much like last week’s post about Liam Hughes business success, this is another from the Galena County arts and crafts fair. The fair had a common theme used by many of the 250 vendors: reusing or resourcing common materials to create art.  The green trend is a snowballing niche market with many advantages: materials are cheap and easy to get, recycling is good for the environment, and unique forms of artistic expression are born.

One of the vendors at this show – G & D Products – carves branches and other natural materials to create decorative floral products.  As seen below, Denny sits in front of his display, carving new products and demonstrating his craft.

Laid off late in his career, Denny decided he wasn’t interested in searching for a new job and opted to turn his hobby – wood carving – into a home based business.  With his wife Gerrie, G & D Products was launched and is now a staple in the arts and crafts community.

Denny and Gerrie Van Den Boom display at many Midwest shows and use this business to supplement their income while taking mini-vacations away from home.  Denny does the carving and Gerrie the arranging of the baskets while providing wonderful customer service.

A major advantage to their product, Denny explains, is that each piece is as unique as the wood used. Each branch, though similar in size, is highly unlikely to have other similar characteristics: wood, density, shape or diameter.

Material cost is a plus: branches are plentiful in supply and free. Want a customized carving or arrangement?  No problem, Denny and Gerrie will gladly work with the tools and materials they have to provide a special gift you choose!  Not only will you have an original creation, but you will feel better about its nature-based origins.  No processed goods for the flowers, no carbon emissions, and no addition to landfills and global warming!

G & D Products have low price points – thanks to free materials – and earn a nice second income.  While they don’t have a website, they can be emailed at dennyandgerrie@aol.com .  Next time you are at a Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa or Minnesota art & craft show, stop by their booth  and have a pleasant conversation with this fine and talented couple.

7 Tips For Fantastic Blog Content

October 29, 2011

How long should my posts be?

Can other people write articles for me?

How often should new content be posted on my blog?

Are off-topic posts a good idea?

How do I create fantastic content that attracts dozens to hundreds of comments and shares every day? How do I get visitors to return and read everything I post?

These content questions and many more are common to most, if not all bloggers at some point.  Perhaps you have some of these questions right now.

Blogs are important to your social media strategy and business goals.   This post shares several tips for producing incredible content for your blog:

1. Find your voice.
Perhaps the greatest challenge for a writer, finding a unique style that fits and brings out your personality is tough!  Experiment with different points of view and emotions.

Here is some advice about finding your voice from expert blogger Corbett Barr:

How do you convey your full personality through words? It’s not an easy thing. How do you show that you’re passionate, gutsy, funny, provocative, dynamic and vibrant like your friends know you to be? How do you let people know your full values, traits and even quirks through writing?

There are two areas that keep us (or me) from fully self-expressing ourselves:

The first is courage. It takes guts to do something you’ve never done before. Knowing that once you write something online it’ll be out there for good can make you question every word, every sentence, every blog post. And what if people don’t like your fully-self-expressed self? That could make a grown man cry. Or at least stop revealing himself.

The second is writing ability. I’m not talking about innate writing ability, something you can only be born with. I’m referring to a learned skill here. The skill of being able to write conversationally, drawing on all of your experiences and thoughts and feelings, and to get those across in a coherent way. I think you can learn that skill. Some people come to it naturally, and other people have to work at it.

Without the courage and skills, many of us end up with a half-assed persona online. Something that sounds stiff and formal in a way that we don’t sound in person. (Side note, this doesn’t just apply to writing, either. You can create personas that you use in real life in different situations, especially in business situations).

To muster that courage and gain those skills, you have to experiment. Try writing rants, try expressing parts of yourself you’ve never shared before, try being funny, try being serious, try acting like a leader.

Dig in and examine your favorite writers and try to figure out how they’re able to connect so easily with you.

Finding your voice is something every blogger should strive to do. Once you have, your writing will be more exciting and powerful forever.[i]

2. Use other resources for your content.
Yes, you can create some really useful content by pulling other sources together on your blog. As a curator or facilitator, you provide a service and time saving for your readers by searching hundreds to thousands of posts and re-posting relevant content.

When writers block occurs and you have nothing interesting to write, try creating a post that comments on existing content. Link freely to get noticed by other bloggers.

Learn to curate content effectively from Brain Pickings by Maria Popova.  Popova is a master of “combinatorial creativity” as she calls it. She uses hundreds of sources, both online and off to create unique content.

3. Write attention grabbing headlines.
You don’t spend enough time on headlines.  However much time you spend, double or triple the effort to produce ones that go viral.

Killer headlines are key to making your post stand out from thousands of similar ones. A headline means a difference from a wildly popular post and a mundane one.

4. Posting more frequently is better.
More frequent posts provide: opportunity to connect with your potential audience and increases the chance of writing a viral post.

Be careful to balance quantity and quality.  Don’t post lots of crap just because you want lots of posts.  If you can write high quality content on a regular basis, try posting more often to grow your audience.

5. Use a successful blogging formula.
Research posts with large numbers of followers or are viral on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter.  Examples of successful blogs are Mashable, Business Insider, and TMZ.

Copy the formula of these wildly successful blogs and add you own slant and voice to create unique content for your blog.  The results may surprise you!

Another viral blog example is seen in the graph below.  Jim Harmer who blogs for ImprovePhotography, followed changes recommended by Pat Flynn of smartpassiveincome.

6. Write with emotion and passion.
You’ve heard this before:

People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing – Dale Carnegie

When you really care about what you’re writing or working on, the passion comes through. It makes your writing more human, more connectable, and powerful. Your words will resonate with your readers and they’ll want to share your content.

If you’re writing content you’re lukewarm about, change. Write about something you care deeply about, something different and challenging.  It will make a difference.

7. Make content readable.
Bloggers work hard to create dynamic and brilliant content but fall flat when paragraphs are long, tedious, and boring.  Visual markers and breaks in text can make a radical difference.

Writing in long monotonous paragraphs without emphasis, is a great cure for insomnia.  Your readers will fall asleep or miss the blog’s point and wear out the back button on the keyboard.

Readers like to scan an article; don’t make them work hard to find the point.  Key words, phrases and headings – especially early in the document – will keep readers on your page.

Scannable text will keep readers interested and improve the chance that they’ll read what you’ve written.

Finally, try making one of these simple changes in your next post.  If that works, great.  If not, try another or two in following posts.  Once you’ve found a combination that works, your blog will run wild.

Google security and you: How to deal with keyword data loss

October 27, 2011

Last week Google sent a rumble through the search engine optimization (SEO) world with a change to how they handle user searches. For the everyday Google user, the change seems innocent enough — they’re going to start using SSL encryption on searches performed by logged-in users.

By Kristi Daeda

Huh?

What is SSL encryption?
Okay, for non-techies — that means that if you are logged in to a Google account, like Gmail, Google+, Google Docs, Calendar, etc., instead of the standard “http://” in front of your search, you’ll see “https://.” What’s the difference? The secure version (with the “s”) will encrypt your search data so that information about what you’re searching can’t be intercepted by “third parties.”

Google’s stated aim is to protect your privacy. So, if you’re searching for something confidential (or just embarrassing) online, other network users won’t be able to see what you’re searching for.

However, if you run a website, and you use Google Analytics or any other web statistics package to track your website’s performance, you’re about to lose an important chunk of your data–keyword information.

What’s happening to my keyword data?
If you’ve invested in any SEO work, or if you’re just interested in how people find your stuff online, keyword data is pretty important. It helps you understand what’s going on in the market, what uses people are finding for your product or service, and it helps you hone in on the cause of big fluctuations in your web traffic. If you provide SEO services, like us, it’s a factor in decisions about strategy as well as analyzing results.

Because this change only affects logged-in users for the time being, chances are the impact will be gradual. But if your traffic is important to you, it’s a good idea to start looking at ways to fill in the gaps.

Some potential workarounds

  • Google Webmaster Tools. Google isn’t taking away all keyword data, even for logged-in search users. Webmaster Tools, once set up and verified, offers some high-level data on search terms, click throughs and rankings.  If you’re not currently using Webmaster Tools, it should be on your to-do list.
  • Test your keywords using Pay Per Click. One source of the outcry among search marketers is that the new change does NOT affect users clicking on paid advertising. So, by using PPC to test your keywords you might be falling right into Google’s clutches. But, we’re aiming for results here, right? Run a sample campaign of your potential keywords using PPC and test various click through and conversion rates. Once you find something that works, then use SEO to promote your site for those terms, and track your rankings for the term to ensure results.
  • Reduce focus on keywords. Keywords are a great data point, but success at SEO is about so much more. Develop an SEO scorecard for your site that isn’t keyword focused. Track things like search rankings, number of new visitors, number of search referrers, overall traffic growth, etc. In the end, what you’re aiming for is more site traffic that leads to more leads or sales. Focus on the outcomes, and some of the intermediary data will be less important.

One of the great advantages of SEO investment is that the results are so easy to quantify — and this is still true. Keyword data is a small piece of the overall analytics puzzle. Identifying other ways to evaluate and measure search engine results can keep you prepped for whatever comes your way.

Take Surveys And Earn Money Part Time

October 26, 2011

A popular part time job is taking surveys via the Internet.  Some surveys pay in points, some in cash, others pay off in both ways.  These positions are extremely flexible and opportunities are available on a daily basis and sent directly to you by email.

Something to consider is how much personal information you are willing to share online or with a third party.  Surveys will ask for your age, gender, general location, and interests.  The more information provided, the more survey options become available.  Be very careful with these: If you feel uncomfortable, don’t reveal much about yourself and your lifestyle.

Surveys do not typically pay off immediately, there is often a waiting period while results are validated, etc.  Some – SurveyHead is one – won’t pay out cash until $50 is earned.  Read the FAQ and about documentation before getting involved.  In the interests of research, Homepreneurs tried SurveyHead and earned approximately $15.  Some surveys pay $1 or $1.50, while others pay up to $20.  The greater the payout, the longer the survey.  Listed below are four survey sites, the first three are recommended by IHA, a customer-service oriented organization, which caters primarily to those interested in working at home, contract or freelance, or running businesses out of their homes.

  1. Survey4Profit.com Free Paid Surveys - Surveys4Profitpromotes market research firms looking for paid survey panelists. We pride ourselves on actually helping panelists find surveys and earn extra money. Our members can earn as much as $5 to $75 per completed survey. Get Paid To Take Free Online Surveys!
  2. GlobalTestMarket was designed to give you the opportunity to get paid for directly influencing global market research. In partnership with top companies around the world, our online surveys offer you the ability to help influence the development of products and services that you use every day.
  3. Opinion Outpost is a research panel. It is a community of individuals who agree to share their views and opinions by answering survey questions from leading marketing research companies all over the world as well as many Fortune 500 companies. It is a fun way to learn about and influence the products and services you use every day. As a ‘Thank You’ for your participation Opinion Outpost offers Opinion Points, which can be redeemed for cash.
  4. Surveyhead works with corporations and market research firms around the world to help them gain competitive intelligence through online surveying.

Newly minted marketers can transcend their small business roots

October 25, 2011

Part of the difficulty of owning a small business is that many important tasks can’t be delegated. That is to say, most small business owners must be their own accountants, HR directors, payroll heads and perhaps most difficultly, marketers. This can be frustrating for company leaders who understand what they must do to attract customers but who are aware of the fact that they lack the necessary skills to do so.

This is because the position of marketer requires some basic knowledge of search engine optimization, copy writing, art direction and web design. When put on top of managing a business solo, many owners may become despondent that they will ever run effective brand awareness campaigns. However, gaining the rudimentary skills that make marketing possible isn’t as difficult as one might imagine. Here are some suggestions for ways to make one’s way into the first levels of marketing.

Attend seminars and take classes

High level lectures and lessons about advertising can be in-depth and expensive. Fortunately, company owners who are just starting out won’t need to worry about advanced and complicated ideas. Instead, a start from the bottom will give a good baseline to understand how marketing actually works. Community colleges and traveling lecturers often have affordable lessons available that small business owners can attend.

What makes this such a valuable and interesting method is that advertising isn’t truly very difficult for most people. That’s because we’re assailed with marketing every day and know more about it than we think, mostly because we aren’t conscious of the effect it has on us. An introductory class will give names to many of the ideas most people already have in their subconscious minds.

Explore other examples

Companies that have implemented successful marketing strategies may like to think that they’ve discovered a closely guarded secret, but the truth is that the process of coming up with a good advertising campaign can be read directly from the promotional materials that a business creates. Research the competition and crib liberally from their work (without infringing on copyrights) to help understand how the process of creating an engaging strategy works.

Hold testing sessions

It’s very rare for small businesses to exist without having friends and family who closely resemble a target customer base. Consequently, company owners should realize that they have marketing material test groups at their disposal. Before committing to an advertisement, promotional product, website or other type of brand awareness campaign, run it by trusted people and ask for their honest opinions. The feedback that this can garner will be invaluable to subsequent drafts.

Located in Maywood, NJ, Myron Corp. manufactures quality custom promotional items to build brand awareness and customer loyalty. Producing items like personalized pens or promotional calendars, Myron works closely with businesses to select the right promotional products to acquire, strengthen and grow relationships with customers and employees.
