“…the BLS [Bureau of Labor Statistics] reports the adjusted unemployment rate at 7.6% right now, where Gallup shows an underemployment rate of 17.2%. That latter figure is far more worrisome because it indicates that more than 20 million Americans remain unemployed or grossly underemployed.”(1)
“Nationwide, the count of America’s poor remains stuck at a record number: 46.2 million, or 15 percent of the population, due in part to lingering high unemployment following the recession.”(2)
Whether you believe Gallup’s numbers in the first paragraph, the AP’s statistics in the second, or the BLS numbers, unemployment is a major problem in the United States. The Euro Zone is suffering too – TheGuardian, a British journal, reports that Euro Zone unemployment was over 12% in May.
Homepreneurs is not a political blog nor does it offer opinions on political or economic matters. Homepreneurs reports only on numbers related to unemployment and its relevance to starting a home business.
Simply, these are ugly numbers and not improving very much at all. Consider this small excerpt from the AP article: ”Four out of 5 U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, near-poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives, a sign of deteriorating economic security and an elusive American dream.”(2)
If you are unemployed or underemployed or just coming out of school, what are the chances of improving your economic status in life? Iffy? Slim? None? The only one that can control your financial future is YOU. Disabled or not, young or old, any race or creed – all demographic groups are at risk.
Your best chance to succeed is to start your own business. It doesn’t have to be big or have a large start-up cost (see this eBook with 10 Business Ideas for Under $100).
This blog post paints a bleak – BUT REAL – picture of the current economic status of the U.S. Other geographic areas are in similar situations. Consider how you will feed your family, buy a house, and live in the future. CONSIDER IT NOW.
And if you need business ideas:
