Is Your Website Mobile Friendly

April 18, 2013

The number of tablet computers and smartphones is growing at an  astounding rate.  There are currently about 1 billion smartphones around the world with another billion expected in the next 3 years.  And those are just smartphone statistics!  Add in the tablet numbers and more often than not, people are using mobile devices for work and entertainment.

Is your home or small business website ready for mobile users?  If you want to sell from your site, it better be!  Home and small business need to be flexible, nimble, and ahead of the technology curve. If you are not, competition will be and you will lose sales.

What to do?

How the Internet Works – A Visual Trip

March 11, 2013

What is the Internet?  The origins of the Internet reach back to research of the 1960s, commissioned by the United States government to build robust, fault-tolerant, and distributed computer networks.  Simplified, the Internet is a series of computers, data packets, cabling, and programming.  You type in a request for a website and somehow – after a slight delay – you receive pictures, videos or text.  But how does the Internet really work?  Below is a quick and educational video on how the webpage you requested shows up on your computer.  Very cool.  This is appropriate for anyone, children included.

How the Internet works – with sound.

This is done soooo well, it is definitely worth the minute to watch…….

You will appreciate what goes on behind the scenes.

In future, think differently when the net is slow.

Meet Siri – Homepreneurs New Assistant

February 18, 2013

I recently replaced my cell phone with an iPhone 5.  I discovered “Siri” today, Apple’s voice recognition software.  Most of this post was dictated to “Siri” and then emailed to myself.  I copied and pasted the text from the email to this post  Talk about a major time saver!

Further, since I always carry my cell phone, I can record spur-of-the-moment thoughts using Siri, no matter where I am.  At work, home, taking a walk or riding my stationary bike.  I can also take a picture of a scene and instantly record thoughts for future reference.  This helps record instant impressions and sparks the creative process.  I can write a blog, do homework or work on the next Homepreneurs book anytime I want.

Siri can be used for multiple purposes.  As a home business owner, you can record ideas, meeting notes, impressions of your competition or invoices to pay.  Just push the button to activate Siri and ask her to take a note, send an email or search the Internet.

Windows 8 First Impression

December 18, 2012

I am typing this post on my new Windows 8 laptop and thought I’d share first impressions.  It is not the tablet version of Windows 8 – the so-called “Surface”.  The prices for the Surface were just more than I was willing or wanted to pay.  I also have a iPad for a tablet anyway and am quite satisfied with that.  My network now has Windows 7, Windows 8, Apple iPad, and a mothballed XP computer as well.

So far, I’m not impressed.  I like Windows 7 and consider it a very robust and usable operating system, probably the best that Microsoft developed.  Not so much with Win 8.  It is definitely a change from the look and feel of all previous Microsoft operating systems.  We are conditioned to use the start menu to launch applications, get to the command prompt (for us veteran users), and generally navigate the computer.  While getting to the start menu is possible, it is not obvious.

Quick URL Tip for Blank Home Page

December 15, 2012

Are you annoyed by the default home page on Internet browsers?  I’ve wanted to mention this tip for some time, but the subject was off-topic for other posts.  You can enter a simple URL – Uniform (or universal) resource locator, the address of a World Wide Web page – that creates a blank or empty page.  Simply enter “about:blank” in the URL field and hit enter.  This will bring up a blank page – refer to screen shots below.

My Default Home Page in Firefox

My Normal Home Page

Enter about:blank into the URL field and hit <enter>

Enter about:blank

The resulting blank home page

Blank Home Page

This works for Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari (Apple), and Chrome (Google).  Much cleaner look and you can set this as a permanent home page, if desired.
