Blog or Website Posts That Drive Massive Traffic

January 10, 2013

Does a big difference exist between a website and a blog.  In some cases – yes.  A website is often larger with static content; a blog is dynamic with shorter snippets of text.  Both are very similar: blogs or websites are personal or corporate or used by non-profit or government.  SEO or search engine optimization is similar and each provides information, opinion or both.  Websites might be a storefront, blogs not as much.  Both are hosted, though blogs are often free or inexpensive.  Websites are larger and are often hosted by the company or third parties.  Blogs  – WordPress.com is an example – is hosted by WordPress at minimal cost to the blogger.  Finally, websites are more likely to make money, whereas only the larger blogs will get a return on investment.  Blogs can lead to book deals, if the content and topic is appropriate.

In either case, every blogger or website content writer wants to drive large numbers of visitors on a regular basis.  The best blogs or sites have millions of visitors per month.  Homepreneurs – by contrast – has a few to several thousand visitors per month.  Listed below are the top 5 websites and their approximate number of visitors:

1)     Google.com – 185,000,000 monthly visits

2)     YouTube.com – 160,000,000 monthly visits

3)     Facebook.com – 150,000,000 monthly visits

4)     Amazon.com – 100,000,000 monthly visits

5)     Yahoo.com – 95,000,000 monthly visits

Using Instagram to Create Great Photos for Social Media Sites

October 11, 2012

Instagram is a free photo-sharing program and social network now owned by Facebook.  Instagram is useful for home business: it quickly allows users to post product pictures on social media sites for marketing. Instagram users can take a photo, apply a digital filter, and share the image with other Instagram users via a social network platform.  Instagram has about 100 million registered and is growing quickly.

Instragram supports iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android camera phones.  The application is available for free thru the iTunes App Store and Google Play.

Instragram addresses three problems associated with mobile cameras:

1) Mobile photos are average quality, but Instragram filters transform the photos into closer to professional quality images.

2) Uploading photos to social networks is a pain.  Instragram makes the process fast and efficient.

3) Sharing photos on multiple platforms requires multiple uploads, edits, etc.  Instagram will share a photo instantly on multiple services.

Instagram also automatically creates 4:4 square pictures.  This is different than the 4:3 aspect ratio used by mobile devices.

Instragram currently works with Flickr, Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook.

Also available is a limited Windows version of Instagram - Instagrille. Testing suggests the feature is limited to viewing and downloading; not uploading and editing.

Below is a famous Lipizzan horse taken in Vienna, Austria before Instagram filtering:

Below is the same Lipizan horse, after applying Instagram’s brightening and sharpening.  Sizing was automatic.

That process took 15 seconds after experimenting with the filters.  Neat, huh?  Think about how this can make your product photos pop!

Don’t Use These Passwords For Computers

July 26, 2012

A recent article by antivirus provider ESET via ZDNet revealed the 25 most commonly used passwords for email, Facebook, user accounts, and more.  These passwords are very common – many are dictionary words – and can easily be hacked.  We strongly suggest that home business users and individuals stay away from these top 25 passwords and use stronger passwords instead.  Homepreneurs discussed strong passwords in an earlier article about hacked Yahoo email accounts.

Here are the top 25, as extracted by antivirus solution provider ESET. Is yours one of them? If so, it’s safe to say you should consider changing it to something stronger immediately.

  1. password
  2. 123456
  3. 12345678
  4. 1234
  5. qwerty
  6. 12345
  7. dragon
  8. pussy
  9. baseball
  10. football
  11. letmein
  12. monkey
  13. 696969
  14. abc123
  15. mustang
  16. michael
  17. shadow
  18. master
  19. jennifer
  20. 111111
  21. 2000
  22. jordan
  23. superman
  24. harley
  25. 1234567

DON’T USE THE ABOVE PASSWORDS!  Stronger passwords are easy: substitute ’0′ for ‘o’ and ’3′ for ‘e’ and ’1′ for ‘I or L’.  Create your own strong series of passwords and avoid the hackers of the world.

5 Tips for Home Biz Startup Planning

May 23, 2012

Considering a home business?   Ongoing economic issues and technological advances have created an ideal environment for new entrepreneurs.  Some notable recent start ups have experienced tremendous success: Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Pinterest are examples.  Each company is a household name and a dominant in its market niche.  Each also started in a small apartment or college dorm room, not in a huge office space with lots of resources.

The founders of these companies were young – several were college students – inexperienced, and not especially wealthy.  Their success is partially a timing and location issue.  But much more contributed to the incredible accomplishment of Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Larry Page and Sergey Brin (Google), Jack Dorsey (Twitter), and Ben Silbermann (Pinterest).  These entrepreneurs along with millions of other business success stories share some common characteristics while avoiding major mistakes.  Here are 5 key tips to get you to think like an entrepreneur:

1) Identify a target market.  This is a key first step early in the business planning process.  Think about the demographic you want to target: ages, gender, ethnicity, and profession are examples.  You may not hit the target when starting out, but thinking this way will help you focus your product or service offering to a narrow group of consumers.

2) Pleasing People.  Yes, making customers happy is important, but so is getting feedback about what clients don’t like.  Think intermediate and long-term here, not short term goals.  Each and every bit of information – good or bad – you gather is a plus and helps for the long term.  As the well known quote states: you can please all people some of the time and some people all of the time…

3) Location, location, location.  A pizza place in the middle of farm fields probably won’t get many customers, but a Chicago-style pizza place in Miami may be a big hit.  A boat store in the middle of Nevada?  Maybe not, but located on either coast could be lucrative.

4) Budget.  New entrepreneurs don’t realize how quickly money is spent.  It is very tempting to buy the best technology, new offices in high rent buildings, and give out bonuses.  We suggest tempering enthusiasm with practical spending.  Save money by working out of your house for starters, use existing or low-end computers, and save the bonus for special occasions.  Create a budget and stick to it.  You wouldn’t live beyond your means, your business should follow the same rule.

5) Consider the launch date.  Launching a business too soon can mean a product is not complete and may turn off customers.  Launching too late costs money in development, provides no income, and may miss a hot trend.

There are many other factors to consider when considering a business, but the above 5 are potentially make or break.  Plan carefully and do the research needed to assure as smooth a start as possible.
