Herbal Tea Business

What It Is:   Growing or blending herbal teas for sale.   Outlook:
  • The global outlook for herba teas is positive as consumers become more health-conscious and drink less soda.
  • Natural and organic products are also seeing positive momentum.
  • FMI suggests that the global herbal tea market will reach $4.6 billion (USD). FMI forecasts an ongoing growth of 7.5%, double the average job growth.
  More Information:
  • All tea (except herbal) is produced from the same plant: Camellia sinensis
  • The difference is in harvesting and processing.
  • The main categories of tea are:
    • Black – popular in the West but produced mostly in China. Dark appearance is from fast and heavy oxidation after harvest. Breakfast tea is generally a black tea.
    • Green – product of China and Japan and is light green or yellow in color. Has a relatively mild, grassy taste.  After harvest, green tea leaves are immediately steamed or pan-fired.
    • Oolong – from China or Taiwan and is light yellow to rich amber in color. Processing allows leaves to wither in the sun and then cool. The wilted leaves are rolled, oxidized and roasted.
    • Pu-erh – similar to black tea with a rich taste, pu-erh is aged and partially fermented. After harvest the leaves are steamed or pan-fired to prevent oxidation. The leaves are fermented and aged for several years.
    • White – a milder taste tea, very popular in the Fujian province of China. Minimal processing after harvest. Some white tea leaves are harvested before growing to full size. No oxidation and slowly dried.
    • Herbal – made from blends of various herbs and spices and typically free of caffeine. Popular herbs include: chamomile, ginger, hibiscus, lavender, lemon, peppermint.
